The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant Benjamin James (ASN: 133168), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery A, 101st Field Artillery, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Seicheprey, France, on 21 April 1918. When a shell struck the gunpit of a battery, although seriously wounded in the chest and legs by fragments, First Sergeant James immediately obtained stretchers for the other men, doing everything possible for their comfort until he fell. He declined medical attention until all others had been looked after, setting a splendid example of self-sacrifice.
