The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Medical Corps) George P. Howe, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Officers Reserve Corps, British Expeditionary Forces (Attached), 37th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the Tower Hamlets Spur, east of Ypres, Belgium, 28 September 1918. Although wounded in the head on the morning of September 28 during the operation on the Tower Hamlets Spur, Lieutenant Howe displayed conspicuous courage and devotion in attending to wounded under very heavy and continuous shell fire, refusing to leave and continuing at his aid post until killed by a shell.
