The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Major (Infantry) Henry W. Hobson, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 356th Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Mihiel, France, 12 September 1918. Within ten minutes after the beginning of the advance, at 5 a. m., Major Hobson was twice wounded in the shoulder by a machine-gun bullet and by shrapnel in the leg. Being in command of the assault battalion and realizing the importance of its operations, he continued to accompany and direct his command throughout the day, notwithstanding his wounds which caused him great pain and difficulty of movement. At halts he had to be assisted to lie down and get up by his adjutant; nevertheless he remained on duty until the fighting of the day was over.
