The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private John J. Hendrickson (ASN: 38379630), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Saipan on 24 June 1944. When his platoon was pinned down by enemy fire, Private Hendrickson, alone, was able to move about and did so in search of the camouflaged enemy machine gun emplacement until he was wounded. In calling back the location of the gun to his platoon, he again exposed himself to point out its exact position. He was killed by a burst of enemy fire, but not before his directions were completed, enabling his platoon to wipe out the strong point and complete its mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
