The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Edward Herter (ASN: 1388652), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 131st Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-de-Harville, France, 10 November 1918. On his own initiative Private Herter left shelter and crossed open ground, swept by machine-gun fire, to rescue a wounded comrade. Though himself severely wounded on the mission, he succeeded in carrying the soldier back to his own lines.
