The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Sergeant Marion L. Gallaway (ASN: 18047626), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France. On 26 July 1944, the Second Platoon of Company L was attacking the enemy in St. Lo, France, and was pinned down by an enemy tank which could not be definitely located. Sergeant Gallaway volunteered to take a bazooka and search for the tank. Crawling out in advance of our liens, he succeeded in locating the tank and started to crawl up to it, but when he had approached to within 50 yards, one of the crew members discovered his presence and fired on him with a machine gun. Although fatally wounded by this fire, the gallant actions of Sergeant Gallaway enabled our own takes to located the enemy tank. It was forced to withdraw, and the platoon was permitted to continue their advance. The heroism and unswerving devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Gallaway are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
