    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Oscar Clifton Griffith (ASN: 2564), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 12th Ambulance Company, 1st Sanitary Train, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Villers-Tournelle, France on 26 April 1918. Private First Class Griffith displayed extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty in going to the assistance of a wounded man lying in the open and administering first aid under heavy fire. He was killed while engaged in this courageous service.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Oscar C. Griffith, United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private Griffith distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Ambulance Company No. 12, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action on 26 April 1918. Private Griffith displayed extraordinary devotion to duty in going to the assistance of a wounded man and remained with him throughout a heavy bombardment until Private Griffith himself was killed.
