The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Donald H. Grant, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, east of Exermont, France, October 4 – 12, 1918. By repeatedly volunteering to carry messages under heavy machine-gun and artillery fire to front-line company commanders, and by his coolness and courage in carrying out the numerous dangerous missions assigned him, under intense enemy fire, Lieutenant Grant was an inspiration to the officers and men around him.
