The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal George Joseph Gaudette (ASN: 64655), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 102d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, north of Verdun, France, 10 November 1918. Corporal Gaudette volunteered to carry a message from his company commander to the commanding officer, 2d Battalion, 102d Infantry. He proceeded on his mission under severe enemy machine-gun and artillery fire and when about half the distance had been covered he was severely wounded in the right side by a machine-gun bullet. Although mortally wounded, Corporal Gaudette continued on his mission until he made the supreme sacrifice.
