The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Michael F. Fitzpatrick (ASN: 91543), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 165th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Landres et St. Georges, France, 14 October 1918. After his platoon commander had been killed, Sergeant Fitzpatrick took command of the platoon. Although painfully wounded in the arm early in the engagement and constantly exposed to intense machine-gun and artillery fire and gas, he remained at his post directing and encouraging his men until his platoon was relieved late that night, when he was evacuated.
