The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal John K. Brown (ASN: 39260208), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 113th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 July 1944, in France. Corporal Brown was assigned to duty with an artillery unit delivering fire on enemy positions. A shell exploded in the chamber of one of the pieces and injured six members of the organization. Corporal Brown received the full force of the explosion, and was mortally wounded. Despite his wounds, he gallantly refused to receive first aid until his comrades had been treated. This personal sacrifice, resulting in the loss of his life, served as an undying inspiration to his comrades. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Brown, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
