The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Major (Infantry) German Horton Hunt Emory, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 320th Infantry Regiment, 80th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Sommerance, France, 1 November 1918. After advancing to the north slope of the Ravine Aux Pierres through heavy machine-gun and shell fire, Major Emory’s battalion was momentarily held up by a very intense machine-gun fire. He was killed while personally directing the attack and encouraging his troops, moving back and forth in front of the line in plain view of the enemy and under direct machine-gun fire.
