Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 147 (June 11, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Kermit W. Biertz (ASN: 6819030), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 743d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 September 1944, in Holland. Staff Sergeant Biertz was a member of a party which came under intense artillery fire while it was repairing an assault gun. Learning that a man had been wounded, Staff Sergeant Biertz and a comrade raced through the shell fire to the casualty and carried him to a vehicle where they gave first aid. Their gallant action saved the wounded man’s life. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Biertz, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
