The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant John Duly (ASN: 1099774), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 55th Infantry Regiment, 7th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Jaulny, France, 8 November 1918. When one of his men became entangled in the barbed wire, Sergeant Duly alone went to his rescue under heavy fire. He then went forward, alone, through intense artillery and machine-gun fire to attack a machine-gun nest. While returning to our lines, he fell exhausted from fatigue and shell shock.
