    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant John J. Dooley (ASN: 545194), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company A, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Dooley displayed extraordinary heroism in action near Crezancy, France, on 15 July 1918. After his company had been withdrawn, Sergeant Dooley voluntarily returned to a position of great danger in order to give first aid and to assist in evacuating the wounded. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant John J. Dooley (ASN: 545194), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Crezancy, France, July 15 – 16, 1918. Throughout the engagement, Sergeant Dooley encouraged the men of his company by his gallant conduct. After the company was ordered to withdraw, Sergeant Dooley voluntarily returned to the position his company had held and, throughout the night of July 15 – 16, assisted in evacuating the wounded.
