The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Rowland Sever Dodge, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, October 24 – 25, 1918. Learning of the proposed advance in which his company was to participate, and, although sick in a hospital, Lieutenant Dodge secured his release and joined his command. He was at all times in advance of his front line, reconnoitering the ground, thereby facilitating the advance. Leading a counterattack, he was killed by rifle fire.
