The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Henry G. Streckfus (ASN: 33732274), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with the enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 242d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, on 25 April 1945, in Wertheim, Germany. Seeing two soldiers struggling for their lives after their kayak had overturned in the swift Main River at Wertheim, Germany, Corporal Streckfus quickly threw off his helmet and weapon and swam to their aid. He overcame the struggles of one of the drowning men, towed him to the river’s edge and carried him to safety while a companion rescued the other man. This deed of heroism was responsible for saving the life of the soldier.
