The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Alden R. Littlefield (ASN: 31398324), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 5 April 1945, in Wurzburg, Germany. During a fanatical enemy counterattack against his mortar position in Wurzburg, Sergeant Littlefield observed German troops in a building across the street from his emplacement. Fearlessly exposing himself to withering small arms fire, he was wounded while making his way from man to man, checking his squad’s deployment against the oncoming attack. Continuing to expose himself, he was mortally wounded when he moved forward to direct his comrade’s fire against an enemy attack that threatened our positions in Wurzburg. His gallant actions reflect the highest credit on himself and uphold the finest traditions of the United States Army.
