The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Walter D. St. Amand (ASN: 11130599), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 1 April 1945, near Vockenrot, Germany. When his intelligence and reconnaissance platoon was subjected to an enemy ambush near Vockenrot, Germany, Corporal St. Amand leaped from his jeep and returned the fire. Fearlessly advancing into the murderous barrage, he inflicted heavy casualties upon the enemy forces until he was mortally wounded by a burst of machine gun fire. Through his great daring and gallant actions, Corporal St. Amand enabled his beleaguered comrades to reach positions of comparative safety.
