    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Theodore J. De Carl (ASN: 2383377), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 60th Infantry Regiment, 5th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, 12 October 1918. In order to deliver a message from the regimental headquarters to the attacking battalion with all the speed possible, Corporal DeCarl crossed an open area under continuous machine-gun fire. Although painfully wounded while traversing this open stretch of 500 meters, he successfully delivered the message.
