The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Carlyle P. Woelfer (ASN: 0-25350), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 24 January 1945, near Neubourg, France. When the enemy attacked our main line of resistance near Neubourg, France, Lieutenant Woelfer proceeded among his men in order to encourage them and determine the situation. Commandeering an armored car, he proceeded to the right flank where an enemy force had infiltrated in strength. Coming upon an enemy machine gun manned by seven Germans, Lieutenant Woelfer fearlessly exposed himself atop the armored car and killed five with his rifle, forcing the remainder to surrender. Dismounting, he then took a captured machine gun and attacked another position from the flank, killing the entire crew. Lieutenant Woelfer’s exceptional courage and gallantry in the face of overwhelming odds reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 93 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Carlyle P. Woelfer (ASN: 0-25350), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 26 January 1945, near Neubourg, France. When the outpost patrol he was commanding was forced to withdraw in the face of enemy pressure, Lieutenant Woelfer organized a covering force to enable his men to cross a 550-yard clearing under intense enemy small arms and artillery fire. Although knocked to the ground by the concussion from shells exploding nearby, he steadfastly remained at his post directing the movement. When one of his men was severely wounded, Lieutenant Woelfer manned a machine gun and protected the litter bearers who were recovering the wounded man. Locating another injured man in the Moder River, Lieutenant Woelfer pulled him out despite intense hostile fire, got him under cover, and gave directions for his evacuation. The courage and devotion to duty exhibited by Lieutenant Woelfer saved the lives of two wounded men, prevented the enemy from obtaining critical information, and succeeded in effecting withdrawal of his patrol.
