The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to First Lieutenant & Adjutant Allan Houston Dougall, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 19 March 1865, while serving with 88th Indiana Infantry, in action at Bentonville, North Carolina. In the face of a galling fire from the enemy First Lieutenant Dougall voluntarily returned to where the Color Bearer had fallen wounded and saved the flag of his regiment from capture.
