The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Bugler Gilbert R. Dalton (ASN: 1975888), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 132d Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Bois-de-Malaumont, France, 9 October 1918. Bugler Dalton and an officer were making a reconnaissance of Bois-de-Malaumont. Upon entering the woods they were suddenly fired upon by machine guns. Together they rushed the machine-gun. The officer was wounded and unable to take cover. Bugler Dalton ran across an open space, exposing himself to short range of machine-gun fire, and carried the officer to a position of safety.
