The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Sergeant First Class John R. Woodworth (ASN: RA-1328544), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. Near Chunjang-ni, Korea, on 14 February 1951, when Sergeant Woodworth’s platoon was attacked by an unknown number of the enemy, he repeatedly exposed himself to the intense hostile fire by moving from one position to another in his platoon, caring for the wounded, and attempting to raise the unit’s morale. When the withdrawal to more tenable defensive positions was ordered, Sergeant Woodworth voluntarily carried out one of the wounded soldiers, but in so doing was cut off from the rest of the rapidly moving unit. Although hampered by the weight of the stricken man, Sergeant Woodworth fought his way out of the enemy infested area and found an opening in the enemy lines which permitted him to return to his unit. Sergeant Woodworth’s heroism and indomitable spirit reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
