The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private John R. Dale (ASN: 96862), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 167th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, while a member of a patrol in “No Man’s Land” in the vicinity of Ancerviller, France, on the night of May 3 – 4, 1918. Private Dale displayed exceptional bravery and coolness when under heavy enemy fire he, together with two of his comrades, went out and brought their wounded leader back to a place of safety. He and his companions then went out again in the face of a severe enemy fire and attempted to rescue another member of the patrol.
