The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Edward J. Crowley (ASN: 1705739), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Glennes, France, 15 September 1918. Leaving cover, under heavy machine-gun and shell fire, Sergeant Crowley visited the outposts, in order the assure himself of their security. After accomplishing this mission he fearlessly exposed himself to rescue a wounded comrade; and, in so doing, lost his life.
