The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Arthur Clemence Cole, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Landres-et-St. Georges, France, 1 November 1918. Lieutenant Cole exposed himself to heavy machine-gun fire in order to lead a small detachment against a strongly held enemy position. Armed with a rifle, he attacked an enemy machine-gun position from the flank, capturing same. He then led his unit against other machine-gun nests, which resulted in the capture of some guns and about 40 of the enemy crews.
