The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) David H. Cohn, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 363d Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Spitaals-Bosschen, Belgium, 31 October 1918. When his company met with determined resistance from enemy machine guns and snipers, Lieutenant Cohn, being the only officer remaining with his company, undertook a dangerous reconnaissance himself rather than assign the mission to others, and while so engaged was mortally wounded.
