Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 313 (September 12, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Gilbert L. Sheffield (ASN: 0-2102292), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 July 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. On that date, Lieutenant Sheffield was a Platoon Leader in a rifle company which was attacking enemy held Hill 266, commonly known as “Old Baldy”. At the onset, Lieutenant Sheffield led his men to a position from where they were able to place a deadly hail of fire on the hostile forces. The enemy retaliated with a devastating concentration of mortar, artillery and small arms fire that wounded let Sheffield and several of his men and made the area untenable. Unmindful of the intense pain of his wound and thinking only of the welfare of his men, Lieutenant Sheffield refused evacuation and directed his unit in a withdrawal movement. Without regard for personal safety, Lieutenant Sheffield placed himself as rear guard to insure that all wounded were evacuated and to lay down a covering fire with an automatic rifle. During this action, Lieutenant Sheffield was wounded again but remained in his position until the last man was off the hill. Lieutenant Sheffield’s actions reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
