Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 182 (June 8, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) John C. Seabury (ASN: 0-1285648), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 February 1951, when the Third Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, began proceeding to the front line of departure to launch an attack against an enemy-held hill northwest of Uijongbu, Korea. Intense enemy mortar fire was encountered and members of the battalion scattered and took cover. Major Seabury continued to go forward and called to those near him to follow. Inspired by his courage, members of the battalion abandoned their cover and followed Major Seabury out of the area of danger from mortars, reaching the line of departure at the anticipated time. During the ensuing attack, contact was lost with the unit on the battalion’s right flank because of an intense concentration of enemy mortar fire in the area. Realizing that lack of contact could greatly hinder the successful outcome of the battle, Major Seabury, with no regard for his own safety, voluntarily went through heavy enemy fire and successfully established contact, enabling the battalion to accomplish its mission. The outstanding gallantry and coolness under fire displayed by Major Seabury reflect great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
