Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 194 (June 4, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant William D. Schrader (ASN: RA-16268048), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 17 March 1953 17 March 1953 in the vicinity of Um-Dong, North Korea. On that date Sergeant Schrader was a member of a group engaged in a counterattack on enemy forces which had penetrated friendly positions. The enemy was strongly entrenched and one machine gun in particular was hampering the movement of the friendly unit and inflicting heavy casualties. Although suffering from a leg wound, he continually moved about the exposed terrain in an effort to destroy this weapon. After other methods failed, Sergeant Schrader, unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for personal safety, boldly rushed the emplacement. Completely exposed to the enemy fire which swept the area, he aggressively gained the objective and killed its occupants with grenades. Then, with equal courage and aggressiveness, he led a section of the group in a sweeping assault upon the remaining positions, causing many enemy casualties and forcing others to flee. The outstanding devotion to duty and gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Schrader on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
