The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal John Wesley Sanders (ASN: RA-37883196), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On this date while Company K was in an attack to secure a dominating terrain feature, heavy enemy resistance composed of small arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire halted the attack. Corporal Sanders, a machine gunner, with utter disregard for his own safety, left his supporting position and advanced toward the enemy, using marching fire while continually exposing himself to the intense enemy grenade fire. Forcing the enemy to abandon his well-fortified position. Corporal Sanders inflicted numerous casualties upon the enemy, enabling his platoon to move forward and secure its objective. The gallantry in action demonstrated by Corporal Sanders reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
