The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John C. Renfro (ASN: RA-18293438), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 72nd Tank Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 28 May 1951 in the vicinity of Inje, Korea. On this date as Private Renfro’s tank column advanced in support of assaulting riflemen, the column was halted by intense hostile bazooka, mortar, small arms and automatic weapons fire, inflicting heavy friendly casualties. The lead tank was hit by several rounds of bazooka fire, which severely wounded the platoon leader, who, while suffering from shock, descended from his tank and was heading for the enemy gun positions. Observing this Private Renfro, disregarding the intense hostile fire, immediately left his tank and rescued the platoon leader and carried him to the safety of his tank. Though painfully wounded himself, Private Renfro assisted in rendering first aid to his wounded comrades until all friendly casualties were evacuated to positions of safety. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty and comrades displayed by Private Renfro on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
