The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Harry F. Carnahan (ASN: 1245941), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 111th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fismette, France, 11 August 1918. Although the bridge crossing the Vesle was being heavily shelled and many men were killed in attempting to cross it, Private Carnahan made repeated trips, each time carrying a badly wounded man. He was finally wounded, but refused evacuation, volunteering for duty the following day and providing medical attention for his wounded comrades by venturing across the bridge through the murderous fire.
