The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Henry Warren Cardwell (ASN: 1307522), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Molain, France, 17 October 1918. Having been separated from their company in a smoke barrage, Corporal Cardwell and Private Lee found themselves face to face with a party of the enemy. Private Lee brought his automatic rifle to his shoulder and attempted to fire, but the gun was jammed and would not shoot. Seeing themselves covered by the gun and not knowing its condition, the Germans threw up their hands, and while Private Lee kept the rifle at his shoulder Corporal Cardwell rounded up the Germans and disarmed them. Their ruse resulted in the capture of 12 of the enemy, comprising 3 machine-gun crews.
