The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Grover W. Calhoun (ASN: 105179), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 3d Machine-Gun Battalion, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Soissons, France, 19 July 1918. Private Calhoun distinguished himself by exceptional coolness and heroic handling of his gun. While under intense fire he inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy, thereby materially aiding the advance, and was killed on 19 July 1918, while seeking an advantageous position during the advance of that date.
