The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private James W. Bragg (ASN: 754936), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 308th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Binarville, France, October 2 – 7, 1918. Private Bragg was on duty with a detachment of his regiment which was cut off and surrounded by the enemy in the Argonne Forest, France, for five days. Though he was without food throughout this period, he continued to render first aid to the wounded, exposing himself to heavy shell and machine-gun fire at the risk of his life until he was completely exhausted.
