The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class George Henry Lawall (Lewall) (ASN: RA-13344994), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 15 December 1950, in the vicinity of Taehung-ni, Korea, the rifle squad of which Private Lawall was a member was separated from the remainder of his outpost platoon and engaged in a heavy fire fight with a numerically superior enemy force. When the platoon leader signaled the squad to rejoin the platoon, Private Lawall, realizing that the enemy’s small arms fire would destroy his entire squad as they moved, remained behind to cover the withdrawal. He stayed in this position until every member of the squad had withdrawn, killing several of the enemy in the process. Before he could rejoin his unit he was killed by a barrage of enemy small arms fire and hand grenades. His outstanding devotion to duty, concern for the safety of his comrades and his heroic disregard for his own personal safety reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
