Bishop (ASN: 551180), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company G, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918, near Mezy, France, during the attack on the Marne River, Private Bishop, single-handed, killed an entire machine gun squad of the enemy and returned to our lines with the captured machine gun.     The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private George O. Bishop (ASN: 551180), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mezy, France, 15 July 1918. Against the advice of his companions, Private Bishop advanced through intense artillery and machine-gun fire against an enemy machine gun, which was maintaining a damaging fire on his company. Single handed, he killed the crew of this gun, returning to our lines with the captured gun.
