The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant Philip W. Bigoney (ASN: 1706231), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company H, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Chateau-Diable, France, 27 August 1918, and 8 September 1918. With utter disregard for his own safety, First Sergeant Bigoney dressed the wounds of many of his comrades under the intense machine-gun and rifle fire from the enemy’s lines. On September 8 he rescued a wounded officer from a heavy barrage, carried him to a place of safety, and dressed his wounds.
