    Action Date:

    February 10, 1944

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Vincent E. Kaufman, United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy. On 10 February 1944, at the Indianola Firing Range, Magnolia Beach, Texas, a fragmentation grenade thrown by a soldier struck the parapet and rolled back into the firing pit. At the risk of his life, Sergeant Kaufman jumped into the pit, removed the grenade from under the leg of the soldiers, who was in a prone position, and threw it over the safety parapet which it barely cleared before exploding. His act not only saved the soldier from death or injury but also officers and men within range. The heroism displayed by Sergeant Kaufman on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
