The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal DeRoy Fred Kammerer (ASN: US-56150046), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 31 July 1952, the first platoon of Company B of which Corporal Kammerer was a member, had the mission of seizing and securing outpost “Kelly”, in the vicinity of Koyang-dae, Korea. Upon reaching the base of the objective, several of the men were completely exhausted from the long, arduous journey and began to straggle. The assault began as scheduled, with the weary men lagging behind. At this time, the assault element received a heavy mortar and artillery barrage which later shifted to the exhausted men. Corporal Kammerer, realizing the necessity for immediate action, moved about the fire swept terrain urging the men forward. Although twice wounded by shell fragments, Corporal Kammerer so inspired the weary men that they routed the well-entrenched enemy and secured the objective. During this action Corporal Kammerer received mortal wounds from a mortar round that landed nearby. Corporal Kammerer’s heroism and devotion to his fellow soldier reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
