Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 212 (June 14, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Miles Harold Jones (ASN: RA-19384968), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 11 December 1951, Sergeant Jones, a medical aidman, voluntarily accompanied a patrol from Company B on a mission of contacting the enemy and capturing a prisoner, near Kumchok-tong, Korea. As the patrol entered the village it was engaged in a fierce fire fight, but succeeded in capturing two hostile soldiers. In a surprise movement, the foe charged fanatically down both slopes surrounding the village, threatening the escape route of the patrol. After a running fire fight the patrol escaped the trap, but in the heat of battle three wounded men were left behind. Unhesitatingly, Sergeant Jones offered to return with other volunteers in order to give the wounded men immediate medical aid. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he returned through the lethal enemy fire to the side of his wounded comrades. In immediate proximity to the foe and under constant hostile fire, he calmly and carefully rendered first aid and then assisted the men back to friendly lines. Sergeant Jones’ outstanding gallantry and untiring devotion to duty were instrumental in saving the lives of his fellow soldiers and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
