War Department, General Orders No. 126 (1919)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Leland M. Barnett, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ivoiry, France, 27 September 1918. Having become separated from his battalion headquarters, Lieutenant Barnett, battalion adjutant, on his own initiative, undertook, under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire, to locate machine-gun nests which were hindering the advance. He ignored the warnings of his orderly as to the danger of this work and continued at it until he was killed.
