    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harry Cooper Barnes, Jr., United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 6th Infantry Regiment, 5th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Bois-Brule near St. Die in the Vosges, France, on 19 July 1918. First Lieutenant Barnes showed good judgment, dash, bravery, and determination in leading his patrol into the enemy’s lines. Although seriously wounded he continued to direct his men and succeeded in driving off the enemy at the same time wounding four of the German patrol with his own revolver.
