Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 128 (June 1, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Edmund W. Harrison (ASN: RA-16320710), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 13 and 14 February 1951 in the vicinity of Chipyong-ni, Korea. Company I, in which Corporal Harrison was ammunition bearer for a weapons squad, was under attack by an enemy force of estimated regimental strength. The enemy had succeeded in getting close to the edge of the perimeter but was held off by the continuous small arms fire until the small arms ammunition was expended. Corporal Harrison, out of ammunition and occupying a foxhole in the outer edge of the perimeter, observed an enemy soldier creeping toward his position with a hand grenade. When the soldier was close enough, Corporal Harrison jumped from his foxhole and clubbed the enemy soldier to death with his empty weapon. Since his weapon was now broken, he found a piece of picket fence to use as a weapon. During the remainder of the action Corporal Harrison killed several of the enemy with his improvised weapon. The gallant conduct and devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Harrison reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
