The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Robert Edward Haberern (ASN: RA-11195908), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 September 1950 in the vicinity of Amdong-ri, Korea. On the night of 14 September 1950 Company E’s defensive position was subjected to three savage enemy onslaughts. Although Private Haberern, a machine gunner, was wounded in the arm during the first assault, he nevertheless continued to fire his weapon and hold his position despite the intense hostile fire. Fearlessly standing fast against overwhelming odds, he raked the attacking enemy with heavy machine gun fire until his gun was rendered inoperative by an enemy hand grenade. Before leaving the position, he completely destroyed the weapon with one of his own grenades. He then joined a comrade in a foxhole, obtained a rifle and, firing the piece with his one good arm, poured effective fire into the enemy. His courageous actions under fire inspired his comrades and contributed to a great extent to the successful defense of the perimeter. The gallantry displayed by Private Haberern reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
