The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Major (Field Artillery) Raymond Brooks Austin, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 6th Field Artillery, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fleville, France, 7 October 1918. In order to obtain first-hand information of the enemy’s disposition and render the maximum support to the attacking Infantry, Major Austin, with absolute disregard for his own personal safety, made repeated trips to the Infantry front line during the attack of the 1st Division, 7 October 1918.
