Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 21 (January 24, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal John Joseph Doyle (ASN: US-51036246), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 April 1952, Corporal Doyle was the automatic rifleman of a squad of Company A, 1st Battalion, which was assigned the mission of assaulting an enemy-held outpost known as “Nori” in the vicinity of Kojanna-Ri, Korea, to recover the bodies of two men mortally wounded during a previous engagement with the enemy. The friendly unit succeeded in recovering one body. As the friendly elements were advancing to the crest of the hill to recover the second casualty, they encountered intense enemy mortar and artillery fire but continued with their mission until they were forced to seek cover upon being subjected to the close range machine gun fire of the hostile forces manning the outpost. Refusing to seek cover, disregarding his personal safety, and ignoring the treacherous enemy fire, Corporal Doyle fearlessly rushed to the top of the hill where he stood in an exposed position as he fired a crucial and rapid volley of fire from his weapon upon the hostile forces. He fired his weapon so accurately and effectively that the chattering of the enemy weapons ceased long enough to enable the friendly elements to regroup and initiate a concentrated assault upon the foe. Corporal Doyle was mortally wounded during the ensuing exchange of grenade fire between the friendly squad and the foe. Corporal Doyle’s conspicuous gallantry, outstanding courage, and untiring devotion to his country reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
