Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 239 (June 30, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Philbert C. Doleac (ASN: 0-61304), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 March 1951, while Company C was attacking Hill 337 near Uijongbu, Korea, it found itself fully engaged in a vicious firefight with a well-entrenched determined enemy. After the battle had been going on for some time, the company was still short of its objective and running out of ammunition. When Lieutenant Doleac was informed of this serious fact he hastily organized a carrying party of Korean laborers and led them forward with all available ammunition. Upon arrival at the designated ammunition point, he found that enemy action prevented contact with the attacking platoon and that the frightened carrying party refused to go further. Realizing the necessity for delivery of the vital supplies, Lieutenant Doleac collected every bandoleer that he could carry and fearlessly moved up the fire swept hill to the platoon’s position. Twice, greatly exposed to enemy fire, he performed this daring and hazardous mission. Gaining courage from his inspiring example, the carrying party at last followed Lieutenant Doleac and delivered an ample supply of ammunition to the embattled unit. The dauntless courage and gallant leadership exhibited by Lieutenant Doleac reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the most honored traditions of the military service.
